Today is International Drug Checking Day! This time last year NSW had just run its first drug checking trial at Yours & Owls. Roughly 12 months later the trial wrapped up at Mighty Hoopla on Feb 21st.
Across 12 NSW Health drug checking trial events, 1,846 people accessed the service and 1,480 samples were tested; most people expected MDMA, ketamine or cocaine, 86% of samples contained only what was expected, and the service also recorded 344 naloxone interventions with 501 Nyxoid boxes provided.
At the heart of the trial was the NUAA drug checking peers. These were the people who greeted punters, took them through the service and sat down at the end to have a frank discussion about harm reduction. No judgement, just facts and expert advice from someone who knows what they're talking about.
We have had nothing but incredibly positive feedback about NUAA's peers and are so proud of the care they provided throughout the trial.
We don't know what the future holds, but we know drug checking works and we hope to be involved with whatever comes next.
